Smash and Overwatch wrap up successful week for esports

September 29, 2023

COLUMBIA, S.C.

CIU Rams Smash vs. Widener University

Thursday, September 28th will go down as the very first official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate match in CIU Esports history. Lead by Team Captain, Erik Wisotsky, CIU Rams Smash went 2-0 in the best of 3 match against Widener University. The energy was high in the esports arena as all the work and dedication that went into preparing for this match came to fruition with the first ever match resulting in a win for the team.

Unlike the more common 1v1 Smash Tournaments for which the title is known, CIU Rams Smash competes by way of 4v4 Crew Battles. In this mode, each team presents four players each choosing a different character. Regulations dictate a 7 minute timer, 3 stock, and no items/smash balls. Players face off 1v1 until all three stock are depleted or time runs out – at which point the winner is decided by with lowest damage percentile. When all three stock are depleted, the winning player goes on to play the opposing school's second player, self-destructing any stock they'd lost in the prior battle prior to beginning the next battle. In both matches, the CIU Rams Smash team never sent out their third or fourth players, using only their first and second players to take all 12 stocks. Well done CIU Rams Smash!

CIU Rams Smash competes in the NACE Varsity Plus division, where they'll compete against a wide variety of schools all over North America. Matches are held every Thursday night at 7:00pm ET and are broadcasted on Twitch with shout casting provided by current CIU students and staff.

CIU Overwatch Gold vs. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

CIU Overwatch Gold had another 3-0 win in NACE Starleague against SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday evening. Remaining undefeated in the regular season, CIU Overwatch Gold is showing tremendous promise this season. Under the direction of Team Captain Ray Williamson, the team works diligently to find as much scrimmage and practice time as possible. After the win, DPS player Ayden Wiggins offers a generous shoutout to his teammate Hunter Phillips saying "Kibs [Phillips] is the person I have to stick the closest to when we run this comp, and he always hits his shots." Well done CIU Overwatch Gold!

CIU Rams Smash competes in the NACE Open Premiere division, where they'll compete against a wide variety of schools all over North America. Matches are held every Thursday night at 7:00pm ET and are broadcasted on Twitch with shout casting provided by current CIU students and staff.
