Rams steamroll Knights in high-scoring affair

LAURINBURG, N.C. - CIU women's soccer traveled north on Wednesday, Sept. 27 to take on St. Andrews University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup. The Rams hold a 4-1-1 all-time record against the Knights, and they picked up another win this afternoon. This momentum comes off a win over Brenau University (Ga.) this past Saturday, Sept. 23. CIU is now 5-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in AAC play.

Match Summary: The Rams put immediate pressure on the Knights' defense, taking a shot 33 seconds into the game. St. Andrew's first shot came at 6:28, but it sailed wide. CIU took an early lead, with Callie Rowe finding the back of the net off an assist from Mazzie Leos (7:07).

Mercy Berkemeyer, Thais Roberto, and Lily Jackson each took a shot, but neither could make it past the Knights' keeper. The Rams came close to extending their lead off a corner, but the shot from Marisa Dill went high. However, CIU kept the ball in St. Andrews' defensive end so that Rowe could set up Dill to extend their lead 2-0 (26:29).

The Rams took five more shots before they could net it again. Abby Roloff entered the game and scored her second goal of the season less than two minutes later to give CIU a 3-0 edge. The Rams continued to attack on offense, taking six more shots before the frame ended, but the score remained 3-0.

CIU continued this momentum after taking four shots in the first ten minutes of this half. Rowe was able to set Dill up off of a corner kick to extend their lead to 4-0 (56:57). About five minutes later, Jackson scored from an assist by Roberto.

Keeping the ball on St. Andrews' side of the field, the Rams forced a corner kick from Roloff, resulting in an own goal to extend their lead 6-0 (74:30). Five minutes later, Haley Hernandez joined in on the action to be the sixth Ram to find the back of the net. Roloff closed out the game, scoring the final goal off of a penalty kick (88:01) to finalize the 8-0 victory for CIU.

The Rams came out firing on both sides of the field, taking 32 shots but holding St. Andrews to only three. Dill and Roloff led the team with two goals apiece, as Vengelis led the team with five shots. Hailey Resetar picked up a save in the first half to help guide the Rams to a clean sheet.

Up Next: CIU hosts Bryan College (Tenn.) on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. EST.
