Two goals from Roberto leads Women's Soccer to third consecutive clean sheet

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU women's soccer returned home to host Bryan College (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon. The two teams last contest resulted in the Rams' first-ever win over the Lions to knock their conference foe out of the 2022 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament. CIU continued their momentum from their last two wins over Brenau University (Ga.) and St. Andrews University (N.C.) with a 4-0 win over Bryan. The Rams are now 6-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in AAC play.

Match Summary: CIU's offense was aggressive this afternoon, maintaining possession for most of the first half. The first shot came three minutes into the game off of the head of Mercy Berkemeyer, but the ball sailed high over the post. Shortly after, Thais Roberto found the back of the net after being set up by Marisa Dill (4:15).

The Rams continued to push offensively, with Callie Rowe taking a shot and CIU forcing two corner kicks. Avery Long doubled their lead, assisted by Berkemeyer early into the first half (12:25).

The ball stayed on the Lion's defensive end, and CIU came close to tallying another goal after Mazzie Leos rocketed a shot off the crossbar. Roberto attempted a shot off the rebound that Bryan's keeper blocked. Olivia Young cleared out the Lions' closest attempt at a shot to prevent a scoring opportunity.

CIU took three more shots before a Bryan player was handed a red card, forcing the Lions to play with 10 for the rest of the match. Lily Vengelis took advantage of this, extending the score to 3-0 off an assist from Berkemeyer (43:02) before the half.

Roberto continued to be a force on offense, adding her second goal of the game with the help of Leos to give the Rams a 4-0 lead (55:01).

Ellie Berkemeyer's shot came close, but the keeper could collect it (64:20). CIU kept making the Lions' keeper work as they took six more shots before the end of the contest, but they couldn't add another goal before the buzzer. Bryan took just one shot coming at the 83:01 mark, but it sailed high, so the Rams' keepers had a light day.

CIU outshot Bryan 28-1, one of the largest shot margins in program history. Roberto and Vengelis led the team with four shots, and Amber McKinley followed with three.
