September 20, 2023

Box Score

WALESKA, GA. - CIU men's soccer traveled to the Peach State to take the pitch against Reinhardt University (Ga.) on Wednesday. The Rams took the lead a little into the second half, but the Eagles quickly took the advantage back and finished with a 3-1 victory. CIU is now 5-1-2 and 3-1-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

Match Summary: Reinhardt came out aggressive, taking their first shot of the game three minutes into the contest. CIU was awarded with the first corner kick, but the offense could not capitalize on it. Shortly after, three Eagles took a shot, with one going high and Matias Breit saving the other two.

From here, the ball made its way up and down the field, with CIU and Reinhardt getting multiple shots in. Breit picked up his third save, and the Rams' backline deflected a shot. Bryan Molina got in on the action and took his first shot of the game (17:12) that the Eagles' keeper saved. Following this, Romulo Barreto took two corner kicks that the Rams could not capitalize on.

Both teams continued to force the issue offensively, as Breit added another save to keep the Eagles off the board. Fernando Ferro and Molina each posted a shot with under two minutes in the first half, both getting deflected by Reinhardt's backline . The Eagles and Rams stayed deadlocked after 45 minutes of action.

Less than a minute after the whistle to begin the second frame, Reinhardt took their first shot of the half that Ferro was able to clear out. A few minutes later, he took a shot of his own that went high. Barreto would get the Rams on the board off an assist from Molina (55:04), but the score evened out less than five minutes later after a Reinhardt penalty kick goal.

Reinhardt rallied from this and scored two more goals less than three minutes later to take a 3-1 lead. CIU only took two more shots, as the Eagles settled in defensively. The final several minutes of the contest were chippy as the second half was littered with fouls and yellow cards committed by both teams.

Up Next: CIU will get a little less than a week off before hitting the road next Tuesday, Sept. 26, and heading north to face St. Andrews University (N.C.) at 4 p.m. EST.
