COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU women's soccer welcomed the Milligan (Tenn.) for another Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match-up on Saturday afternoon. The Rams are coming off a draw in their first home conference game against Columbia College (S.C.). CIU holds a 0-3-1 record against the Buffalos. Despite taking an early lead, the Rams fell to Milligan 3-1 to make their record 3-2-1 (2-1-1).
Match Summary: The Rams held control of the possession for much of the early moments of the first half. The ball went back and forth between both defensive ends, and CIU came close to scoring their first goal on a missed opportunity on a free kick from Amber McKinley. After this, the Rams kept threatening the Buffalos with many scoring opportunities.
CIU came close to scoring off of a corner kick from Callie Rowe, but the header from Thais Roberto went wide. The Rams defense also stepped up to prevent Milligan from finding the back of the net, as Marisa Dill headed a free kick away and Avery Long blocked an attempt at a cross.
The Rams found their way on the board, thanks to a header from McKinley off of a corner kick from Rowe (18:32). Shortly after, the Buffalo backline cleared and deflected two potential scoring opportunities from the Rams. Dill came close to scoring her own goal, but the shot went wide.
The only shot of the first frame for Milligan came off a free kick at 39:53. This would have resulted in a goal for the Buffalos if it had not been for an offsides call. CIU went into the half leading 1-0.
The second half started much like the first, with both teams trading possessions on both sides of the field. The Rams' first scoring threat of this half came off a corner kick from Lily Jackson, but the Buffalos' defense cleared it out of the box.
The Buffalos scored their first goal and tied the game off of a free kick (63:41). CIU had the chance to respond after a free kick from Dill, but the header from Leos went wide. Dill continued to pressure the defense, taking a rocket of a shot that the Buffalos keeper saved.
Milligan took the lead at 71', but Roberto and Battaglia limited their damage by clearing out two crosses. The Buffalos could take and keep control of the game for most of the second period, extending their lead 3-1 with less than five minutes before the final horn.
Up Next: CIU is back on the road next Wednesday, Sept. 20, to face off against Reinhardt University at 3:00 p.m.
