Women's Soccer battles with (RV) Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. - CIU women's soccer was back on the road this afternoon to take on (RV) Reinhardt University. It was a tight match, but Reinhardt scored a goal at the end of each period to take the 2-0 win and hold their all-time undefeated record against the Rams. CIU is now 3-3-1 and 2-2-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

Match Summary: Reinhardt took control of the game early into the contest, forcing a corner kick just two minutes in. This was followed by a saved shot by Brooke Monfils to keep the Eagles off the board. Ten minutes later, another shot was saved by the Rams' backline.

The ball stayed on the Rams' defensive end for most of this half as Reinhardt took two more shots that went wide. The Eagles took another shot that ricocheted off the post (25:38), and the Rams were able to clear it to prevent the threat of a goal.

The Eagles forced two more corner kicks, but Monfils gathered in two shots to keep the score 0-0. Seven minutes before halftime, Reinhardt found their way onto the board to take a 1-0 lead. CIU held them to this lone goal but could not get a shot off in the first half.

CIU took the first corner kick of the second period, but the Eagles' defense responded by clearing the ball and removing the scoring threat. Mercy Berkemeyer attempted a cross shortly after, but Reinhardt's defense cleared it out once again. The Rams kept good control of the ball for most of the half's first seven minutes until Reinhardt was awarded two corner kicks after applying some offensive pressure. Both corners resulted in shots that CIU's defense was able to save.

Not long after, Lily Jackson took the first shot of the game for the Rams (54:37), but it sailed high. Reinhardt's offense did not strike again until twelve minutes later, with a shot that went high off of a corner. From here, the Eagles continued to pressure the Rams' defensive end of the field with two more wide shots.

Then, Reinhardt extended their lead to 2-0 (82:33) as the ball was just out of reach from Monfils' outstretched hands. Marisa Dill picked up another defensive save with less than a minute left in the contest to keep Reinhardt's lead to 2-0.

Jackson took CIU's only shot of the game, while Monfils posted three saves in her first start in the goal.

Up Next: CIU returns home on Saturday, Sept. 23, to host Brenau University (Ga.) at 5 p.m EST.
