Rams take pivotal game one from Skyhawks

WEST POINT, Ga. - CIU had an early morning game for the first game in their final Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Point University (Ga.). This series is essential for the Rams, as the results will decide their postseason fate. Despite a push from the Skyhawks in the last few innings, CIU held onto the lead to take game one.

GAME ONE: CIU 7 PU 6: Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, but CIU took a big lead in the second. Joshua Hernandez started the inning with a double, scoring off of a bunt from Carter Willis that forced an error from the Skyhawks. Four more singles, a walk, and an error in the same inning gave the Rams a 5-0 lead. Britton Morris added another run in the third with a solo shot over the right field fence and another in the fourth after an RBI groundout from Rafael Gonzales. Christian Orr kept the Skyhawks scoreless until the seventh inning, when they scored two. Point added on four more runs in the final two innings of the contest, but Brandt Miller threw a runner out at home to end the game.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Willis, Morris, Miller, Brandon Arnold, and Tanner Martinez notched two hits a piece.
  • Morris hit his 11th homer of the season, and Martinez hit his first triple.
  • Christian Orr started on the mound and allowed only seven hits and two earned runs in seven innings.

Up Next: CIU closes their final series with a doubleheader tomorrow, April 28th, starting at 3 PM. Another win tomorrow is necessary for the Rams to clinch a postseason berth.
