COLUMBIA, S.C. - After a win yesterday, CIU guaranteed themselves an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) postseason berth, thanks to a loss from another conference opponent. The Rams did not need a win today to keep their season alive, but that did not stop them from continuing their momentum from the game-one win yesterday.
GAME TWO: CIU 9 PU 7: CIU struck first in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double from Price Alexander that scored Britton Morris. Point tied it up in the fifth after a sac bunt, but the Rams took the lead after a sac bunt from Carter Willis and a two-run blast from Chase Hadley. The Skyhawks took a two-run lead in the sixth (6-4) until CIU cut this lead to one when Joshua Hernandez scored on a wild pitch. Point added another in the eighth, which the Rams took back in the top of the ninth. Hernandez scored Jennings Greene and Shane Hammonds with a single up the middle, followed by a single from Hadley that scored two more (9-7). Despite a leadoff double in the final inning, the Rams got three consecutive outs to end the game and secure the series win.
Box Score Highlights:
- Hadley played a big part in the Rams' win today, with three hits, including his first home run of the season, and four RBI.
- Hernandez also picked up three hits, while Greene, Alexander, and Emmanuel Maldonado had two a piece.
- Deric Hanko allowed just five hits in five innings with one earned run, and Brett Collins allowed only two hits and no earned runs in two innings.
GAME THREE: CIU PU: Hernandez put the Rams on the board in the first inning with an RBI single that scored James Lovera. Point evened out the score in the bottom of the second, but CIU retook the lead in the top of the fourth. The Rams scored three runs after an RBI walk from Shane Hammonds and a two-RBI single from Brandt Miller. However, this lead did not last long as Point scored four runs in the bottom of the inning on two walks, two singles, and an error. The game was again tied when Brandon Arnold scored Hadley off an infield single. The Skyhawks went ahead again in the fifth, but Hammonds cut their lead to one with an RBI double. Point threatened to score again in the sixth until a groundout ended the inning, and CIU could not score another run in the top of the seventh to drop game three.
Box Score Highlights:
- Lovera led the Rams with two hits and a stolen base.
- Five others notched one hit, with Hammonds and Miller putting up two RBI each.
What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying:
"It was a great finish to the regular season. The guys knew they needed two wins to keep their season going, and they went and got them against a very good Point team. Winning eight of our last ten games to end the season shows the heart of my guys, as well as the hard work they have put in to overcome the adversity we have faced this season. I'm excited to go to battle with them next week in a conference tournament loaded with talented teams."
Up Next: CIU finishes the regular season 18-27 and 11-18 in conference play. They will wait for conference play to wrap up to be assigned their matchup in the postseason tournament.
