Rams overcome Morris in final home game

COLUMBIA, S.C.- CIU took Miller Field for the last time this season to host Morris College (S.C.). The Rams have faced off against the Hornets twice before this afternoon, with both games resulting in run-rule victories. However, Morris showed up this afternoon and forced a nine-inning game, but CIU was able to leave with another win.

CIU 8 MC 6: The first three innings went by quickly, as neither team scored a run, and only four hits were allowed between the two. CIU struck first in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run from a wild pitch. Morris responded with three of their own in the fifth after three back-to-back walks, but this was the last time they would hold the lead. A three-run blast from Britton Morris gave the Rams the lead once again (4-3). CIU added two more in the sixth after Emmanuel Maldonado scored Jennings Greene and Cole Cascio. The Hornets pushed two more across in the seventh, which CIU responded to with two of their own, thanks to a two-RBI single from David Mora. Morris tacked on another in the ninth after an error, but a fly out to center field ended any comeback threat.

Box Score Highlights:

  • 11 Rams notched a hit, including Morris, who hit his tenth homer of the season.
  • Maldonado hit his first triple of the season, giving CIU six.
  • JT Stanley started on the rubber, allowing no earned runs and four strikeouts in four innings. Brett Collins picked up his first win of the season with two strikeouts, and Phillip Hodges recorded his third save.

Up Next:  CIU hits the road for their final Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Point University (Ga.) on April. 27-28.
