Softball collects pair of AAC wins at Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. - CIU softball tacked on two more Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) wins to their season total on Saturday as they swept Bluefield University (Va.) in a conference doubleheader. The Rams recorded a 5-0 shutout in game one and then collected a 5-4 victory after Bluefield showed some life in game two. The matchup was the tenth all-time between the two programs, as CIU is now 8-2 in the all-time series.

Game One: CIU 5 Bluefield 0: After goose eggs from both squads in the first two innings, the Rams jumped out in front on a two-RBI double from Hallie Miller in the third. After a solid inning from pitcher Cissy Doolittle in the bottom of the third, CIU added another on a Shannon Patton RBI in the top of the fourth. The Rams continued to extend their advantage as a Macey Drye shot to left field was marked a double and brought home Josie Self. The Rams' stout defensive effort continued throughout the contest as CIU added one more run before the final out was recorded.

Box Score Notes:

  • The Rams had ten total hits as a team, with three doubles.
  • Drye, Patton, and Self each had two hits to lead the way for the Rams.
  • Doolittle continues a solid senior campaign as she struck out seven and did not yield a run.

Game Two: CIU 5 Bluefield 4: The Rams struck in the first inning on a two-RBI single from Self to take an early lead. An RBI double from Ally Clapp built onto the Rams' advantage, but Bluefield responded with a two-run homer in the third. CIU pushed the lead out to 5-2 in the fourth, but Bluefield trimmed the deficit down to 5-4 heading into the sixth inning. Jada Cox entered the circle in the bottom of the sixth and held the Bluefield bats in check to close out the contest.

Box Score Notes:

  • The Rams totaled seven hits as Dallas Mayers was the only Ram with multiple, collecting two.
  • CIU once again had three doubles in game two.
  • Miranda Fulmer started the game tossing 4.1 innings and chalking up a career-high nine strikeouts on her way to a win.
  • Cox recorded the save with three K's in two innings.

What Coach Sara Allen is saying: "Our pitching really came through for us today. Cissy and Miranda had great starts, and Jada was clutch with the close. It was also nice to have the bats wake up again, especially with the challenge of strong winds knocking every ball we hit hard down. All in all those were two great team wins today."

Up Next: CIU begins a road stretch at Milligan (Tenn.) on Tuesday, Mar. 28, with games at 2 PM and 4 PM.
