CIU overcome by late game push as Skyhawks narrowly take series

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Now firmly on the backstretch of the 2023 season, CIU looked to get some solid footing in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) as they went up against the Skyhawks of Point University (Ga.) in a midweek AAC matchup. Point's bats got going early and in the final inning to win game one 11-2, and then followed up with a big sixth inning in game two to slip by CIU 8-6.

Game One: PU 11 CIU 2: Point took advantage of well-placed hitting to take a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. CIU would finally respond by scoring two runs via a Macey Drye double down the left-field line to cut the lead down to three. Stellar relief pitching from Miranda Fulmer kept the opposition at bay through the seventh inning when point finally broke through and collected six runs to lock up the victory.

Box Score Notes:

  • CIU had five different players collect a hit.
  • Drye and Josie Self led the Rams with doubles with Drye notching two RBIs.
  • Fulmer gave up just three hits in four innings, along with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two: PU 8 CIU 6: Point again drew first blood in the third inning, but CIU retaliated with a five-run third inning. A bases-loaded hit by pitch by Taylor Allen started the scoring, followed by singles from Lauren Baker and Drye. The Skyhawks had plenty of fight left, however, and struck decisively in the sixth inning with four big runs. Julia Thielen held the Hawks scoreless in the top of the seventh, but CIU couldn't get any offensive production and went 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Box Score Notes:

  • Dallas Mayers had two hits to lead the team on offense. Taylor Allen drew two walks. while picking up an RBI.
  • It was a mistake-filled game for the Skyhawks, as they recorded six errors compared to just one from CIU.
  • Cissy Doolittle pitched six innings for CIU. She secured three strikeouts and gave up three walks.

Up Next: CIU will head up to the Appalachia region of Virginia on Saturday to face the Rams of Bluefield University (Va.) for a weekend conference series. First pitches are slotted for 1 PM and 3 PM.
