Games slip away from CIU after walkoffs from Screaming Eagles

TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. - CIU baseball stepped out of conference play and headed to Georgia to take on Toccoa Falls College out of the NCCAA. CIU has only lost to TFC once in program history but would drop both games in this afternoon's doubleheader after walk-offs from the Screaming Eagles.

GAME ONE: CIU 4 TFC 5: CIU got on the board in the top of the second inning after an RBI flyout from Emmanuel Maldonado. Toccoa responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning but wouldn't score again until the seventh. CIU tacked on two more runs between the third and fourth innings to lead 3-2. The Screaming Eagles tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh after two walks and a single to force extra innings. The Rams found the lead (4-3) after a fielder's choice from James Lovera pushed a run across home plate, but it was not enough to take the game as Toccoa scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Brandt Miller was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a solo shot.
  • Price Alexander was the only other Ram to notch a hit in this contest.

GAME TWO: CIU 11 TFC 12: Toccoa took the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two on back-to-back solo homers. CIU cut the lead in half with one run in the second with a home run from Josh Hernandez but busted things open after scoring ten runs in the third (11-2), also highlighted by a three-run homer from Austin Paradise and a solo homer from James Lovera. After that, Toccoa slowly chipped away CIU's lead, scoring seven runs between the fourth and fifth (11-9). CIU could not add another run in the game's final two innings, but the Screaming Eagles rallied in the bottom of the seventh to take game two on a walk-off double.

Box Score Highlights:

  • James Lovera led the Rams with two hits, including one homerun.
  • Six other Rams collected one hit today, while five reached base on a walk.
  • This is the fourth game that CIU has not recorded a single error in the field.

Up Next: CIU hosts Montreat College (N.C.) Friday, March 24, at 5 PM for game one of the series. Games two and three will be held on Saturday, March 25, at 12 and 3 PM.
