Extra innings misfortune robs CIU of AAC series win

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After winning game one of the series Friday night, CIU baseball placed themselves nicely to take their first conference series win. However, with extra innings in game two and a strong offense from Bluefield University (Va.) in game three, CIU would fall 2-1 in the series.

Game Two: CIU 6 BU 9: Bluefield jumped on the board in the first inning after two walks and an error, then tacked on another in the third with an RBI double. CIU cut their lead in half (2-1) in the bottom of the inning after a sac fly from Joshua Hernandez. They took the lead in the fourth with two unearned runs due to pass balls from the opposing catcher. Bluefield took a 5-3 lead in the sixth after a two-run homer and a sac fly, and CIU closed the gap to just one run after an RBI single from Emmanuel Maldonado in the eighth. Bluefield added another in the top of the ninth, but a two-RBI double from Austin Paradise would force the game into extra innings. However, Bluefield did not fold and scored three runs in the top of the tenth, and CIU did not respond to drop game two of the series.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Hernandez and Paradise led the Rams with two hits each and three combined RBI.
  • Five other Rams collected a hit, while the team totaled four walks.
  • Jake Lewis had an impressive outing on the rubber, striking out four and allowing no earned runs in two innings.

Game Three: CIU 2 BU 9: Bluefield's bats stayed hot and quickly put six runs on the board in the first two innings. CIU added one run of their own in the bottom of the second after a double from Paradise, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Bluefield went down quietly in the next three innings, while CIU managed to push another across in the fourth (6-2). However, this would be the last time CIU would score in this game, while Bluefield added on three more runs in the top of the sixth. CIU held the visitors in the top of the seventh. but could not respond to the seven-run deficit.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Paradise continued to impress at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles.
  • Three other Rams notched one hit, while five collected a walk.
  • Despite the loss, Deric Hanko tied his season-high of nine strikeouts.

Up Next: The Rams are back on the road as they travel to Georgia to take on Toccoa Falls College (Ga.) on Tuesday, March 21, at 2 PM.
