Softball notches a pair of conference victories with sweep of Montreat

COLUMBIA, SC – CIU softball continued a strong start to Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play downing Montreat College (N.C.) in both games on Wednesday afternoon at the CIU softball field. CIU won the first game 7-3, and the second game 9-2. The Rams are now 3-1 in the AAC.

GAME ONE: The first four innings were a pitcher's duel, with CIU up 2-1 thanks in part to an early Lauren Baker home run. In the bottom of the fifth, Dallas Mayers proceeded to single to center field from the lead-off spot. This led to five eventual runs for the Rams, and they never looked back from there.

BOX SCORE NOTES:
  • The Rams outhit the Cavs 7-3.
  • Margaret Schubert lead the team with two hits.
  • Josie Self was an asset for the Rams in the DP spot, collecting a two-RBI double.
  • Cissy Doolittle pitched the entire game and recorded two strikeouts, and one earned run in 26 faced batters.
GAME TWO:  The Rams racked up five runs in the fourth inning and added three more in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach. Combined with five strikeouts from pitcher Catie McGovern, the team made sure Montreat didn't have a chance to come back.

BOX SCORE NOTES:
  • Mayers and Haylee Wilkerson each hit doubles and finished with two hits apiece. The Rams had seven different players record a hit during the contest.
  • Mayers continued her on-base streak, extending it to 10 games.
