KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - CIU softball began a nearly week-long Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) road trip on Saturday with a trip to Johnson University (Tenn.). The Rams continued what has been a solid start to conference play, splitting their series with the Royals falling in game one 6-2, and then bouncing back for a 2-1 in game two. CIU is now 9-9 overall and 4-2 in AAC play.
GAME ONE: JU 6 CIU 2: The Rams' offense was sluggish in the early going, with the Royals building a four-run lead through the first five innings. However, Hallie Miller would start a comeback attempt in the top of the sixth inning after reaching on a single and advancing to second on a Hannah Murphy walk. Heaven Zamora then stepped up to the plate and recorded a two-RBI double to center to slice into the Royal advantage. Unfortunately, the comeback stalled in the seventh and final inning as the Rams came up short, 6-2.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Dallas Mayers continues what has been an impressive start to the season as she went 3-for-3 at the plate. Miller was a force offensively as well, going 2-for-4.
- Cissy Doolittle pitched the entirety of the contest with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: CIU 2 JU 1: Once again, Mayers and Miller were the catalysts for the Rams' success. Mayers opened the first inning with a single, which was followed by a base hit from Miller to score Mayers. Johnson responded in the bottom of the first with a run of their own, and then both team's bats would go silent. However, Mayers again came up clutch in the top of the seventh, reaching on a single and scoring a few at-bats later on a Haylee Wilkerson RBI single. Pitcher Mary Esterak would stay stalwart in the bottom of the inning as the Rams held on for the 2-1 win.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Mayers led the Rams, going 3-for-4, recording both of CIU's two runs.
- Esterak notched the win in the circle striking out four in seven innings of action.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying: "I am very pleased with how our pitchers pitched and the adjustments our hitters made. In the second game, it was great to see Mary perform the way she did, and Haylee and Hallie come up clutch when we needed it."
Up Next: The Rams stay on the road for another series in Tennessee as they face Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday, Mar. 7, in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
