Rams tangle with Mariners in non-conference Saturday series

COLUMBIA, S.C.– Coming off of an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) split the night before with Union (Ky.), CIU softball stepped out of conference on Saturday to welcome perennial Sun Conference contender College of Coastal Georgia to a wet and foggy day at the CIU Softball Field. After the games were pushed back an hour because of weather, CIU lost the first game by a narrow 4-0 margin and was competitive until the end. The second game slipped away as well as Coastal Georgia put up too many runs early, preventing CIU from climbing all the way back into the contest.

GAME ONE: CG 4 CIU 0:  CIU's first hit came in the third inning when Lauren Baker came in at the leadoff spot and singled over the shortstop to get on first. However, Coastal Georgia's bats came alive in the fifth and sixth innings to prevent CIU's offense from completing a comeback

BOX SCORE NOTES:
  • Lauren Baker has done well in the leadoff position this season. Her single in the third inning was one of three for the Rams this game, along with one from Hallie Miller and one from Dallas Mayers
  • Catie McGovern was solid in five innings with three K's and one earned run.
GAME TWO: CG 9 CIU 1: The Mariner's rained down hits in the second inning of game two, bolstered by an inside-the-park home run. CIU did not put in any runs until the fifth inning, as a comeback attempt was led by catcher Hallie Miller and outfielder Margaret Schubert. Both players recorded base hits in the inning and Schubert notched an RBI. The effort was not quite enough however as the game ended after five innings.

BOX SCORE NOTES:
  • Jada Cox closed in the circle for CIU picking up a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
  • CIU drew three walks while collecting six hits and hit .273 in the second game, up from .125 in the first game.
Up Next: CIU will return to AAC play versus Montreat College (N.C,) on Wednesday, Mar. 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM (DH).
