Rams rally for game two win over Bulldogs

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU softball opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Friday as they hosted Union College (Ky.) in a doubleheader. The Rams led for most of the first game, but a late rally from the Bulldogs sunk CIU's hopes as they fell 3-2. The tables turned in game two as this time it was the Rams rallied for the 7-4 win after trailing for much of the contest.

GAME ONE: UC 3 CIU 2: The Rams struck first after a Shannon Patton single in the first inning advanced Hallie Miller. Miller would then score during a Dallas Mayers at-bat as a fielding error allowed Miller to cross home plate. CIU struck again in the fourth as Megan Stolzenbach doubled to left field and then scored on a Lauren Baker ground out. The tides would turn in favor of the Bulldogs in the top of the sixth as they rattled off three straight runs. The Rams could not answer in the bottom of the inning or in the seventh.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Stolzenbach picked up CIU's only double of the contest while Heaven Zamora was solid going 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Cissy Doolittle allowed no runs through the first five innings before giving up a trio of runs in the sixth. Doolittle collected six K's on the afternoon.

GAME TWO: CIU 7 UC 4: The Bulldogs quickly jumped in front in the first inning to go up 3-0. However, the Rams responded in the third with an RBI double from Dallas Mayers and RBI single from Megan Stolzenbach. The Rams still trailed heading into the fifth, but another double from Mayers, this time resulting in two runs, evened the score at 4-4. The Rams then turned in three unanswered runs to close out the contest as Mary Esterak held the Union offense at bay from within the pitcher's circle.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Mayers had her best offensive output thus far this season with three RBIs and two doubles.
  • Margaret Schubert was effective, going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Stolzenbach utilized her knack for getting on base to score three runs.
  • Esterak recorded the win in the circle, collecting a strikeout while only giving up one hit in 3.2 innings.

Up Next: The Rams are back at home tomorrow, Feb. 25 for a doubleheader with non-conference foe Coastal Georgia beginning at 2 PM.
