Softball collects two wins over NCAA DII opponent in home opener

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Love was in the air as CIU softball played their home opener on Tuesday as students and staff took a break from their Valentine's Day festivities to watch the Rams sweep NCAA DII Benedict College (S.C.) 5-3 in game one and 4-1 in game two. The Rams have now won four straight and move to 4-2 on the season.

GAME ONE: CIU 5 BC 3: The Rams quickly jumped out to a substantial lead in the first inning after a string of runs capped off by a two-run homer from Shannon Patton. Mary Esterak was stalwart in the circle through five innings, not allowing a run until the fifth. Benedict did cut the Rams' advantage down to 5-3 on a home run in the sixth, but Sadie Johnson was solid in relief and closed the contest out as the Rams recorded the victory.

Box Score Notes:

  • Ally Clapp has impressed early in the season and continued that trend on Tuesday, going 2-for-3 at the pate. Megan Stolzenbach and Lauren Baker also picked up two hits in three at-bats as well as Stolzenbach collected CIU's only double.
  • Shannan Pattion recorded a home run and two RBIs while hitting .500.
  • Mary Esterak notched her first win of the season with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO: CIU 4 BC 1: CIU demonstrated their defensive prowess in the second game as Baker made several difficult plays look easy from the shortstop position. Haylee Wilkerson also showed athleticism as the senior catcher ran down multiple bunts and chalked up two assists. The Rams only allowed one run, which came in the second, as Wilkerson put the nail in the coffin in the sixth inning with a rope to left field that stayed fair for her first home run of the season. CIU finished the game with consecutive outs as Cissy Doolittle struck out the final two batters of the contest for the Tigers.

Box Score Notes:

  • Only three Rams recorded a hit as Wilkerson led the way with two RBIs and a home run.
  • Doolittle diced up Benedict with nine K's while only allowing three hits in seven innings pitched.
