Softball clashes with Middle Georgia State in doubleheader

COCHRAN, Ga. - CIU softball took a quick road trip on Friday as they played a doubleheader with Middle Georgia State University. MGA hails from the Southern States Conference of the NAIA and has built one of the more competitive NAIA softball programs in the Southeastern United States. CIU fell in game one 8-0 and then, despite putting up a plethora of runs in game two, dropped the contest 12-8.

GAME ONE: MGA 8 CIU 0: The Rams' first hint of offensive production came in the second on a Dallas Mayers base hit. In the next inning, Margaret Schubert tried to get some momentum going picking up a single and then reaching second on a ground out. It wasn't enough to overcome what was already a 4-0 deficit, however, as the Knights took the win in five innings.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Mayers and Schubert picked up a hit apiece.
  • Julia Thielen started the game, collecting a strikeout in the first inning as Miranda Fulmer finished the contest for CIU in the circle.

GAME TWO: The Rams fell behind 8-0 through the first four innings but showed great determination rattling off five runs in the fifth inning. The Knights responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. However, CIU would not go away as Mayers recorded a two-RBI single in the top of the sixth. Hannah Murphy would continue the scoring with a base hit which sent Mayers across the plate. Despite the Rams' offensive burst, they could not complete the comeback as MGA recorded the 12-8 win.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • The Rams had four players record two hits, and seven players pick up at least one.
  • Hallie Miller got on base four times, going 2-of-3 at the plate, picking up two BB's and an RBI.
  • Cissy Doolittle tossed 4.1 innings with two strikeouts, while Jada Cox closed out the game allowing just two hits in 1.2 innings pitched.

Up Next: The Rams travel to Augusta for a doubleheader with Paine College (Ga.) on Saturday, Feb. 18, beginning at 3 PM.
