Rams split with Seahawks behind a barrage of homeruns

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- CIU baseball took the field for games two and three in their four-game series against No. 25 Keiser University (Fla.) on Friday. The Rams looked to bounce back after falling 10-0 yesterday in game one. Game two was a full nine-inning game, while game three was only seven. CIU split the day after losing 9-3 in the first game; they picked up their first win of the season over the Seahawks 3-2.

Game Two: CIU 3 KU 9: t was another pitcher's duel through the first three innings, with pitchers on both sides only allowing five base runners to reach first. Then, Britton Morris put CIU on the board with a deep homer to left-center (1-0). The Rams maintained this lead until the bottom of the 5th inning when Keiser's bats woke up. The Seahawks put up eight runs in the 5th and 6th inning to take the lead 8-1. Price Alexander answered in the top of the 7th with a home run of his own, closing the gap slightly. Keiser added another run in the bottom of the 7th after an error, and then Morris homered again in the 9th to end the game 9-3.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Morris had a day at the plate, going 2-4 with two home runs.
  • Alexander was also 2-4, with one of these being a solo home run.
  • Chase Hadley picked up his first hit of the season.

Game Three: CIU 3 KU 2:  CIU started the game with three back-to-back singles, pushing Rafael Gonzales across home plate to take the lead in the first inning. The Rams extended their lead after a two-run home run from Britton Morris. Keiser answered with two solo home runs of their own in the bottom of the third to close the gap, 3-2. Keiser threatened to push another run across in the bottom of the 6th, but a strikeout from Deric Hanko ended the inning. The Rams loaded the bases in the top of the 7th but could not bring anyone across home plate, and CIU's defense was solid in the last inning to take game three of the series.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Morris hit a two-run home run, making it his third of the day.
  • Gonzales and Emmanuel Maldonado picked up two hits each.
  • Hanko picked up his first win of the season, accompanied by nine strikeouts.

Up Next: The Rams will take the field for game four against Keiser to close the series, and they trail the series 1-2.
