KISSIMMEE, Fla. - CIU women's soccer hit the road to kick off pool play at the NCCAA Women's Soccer National Championship. The Rams were seeded No. 2 and slated to take on the No. 6 seed Regent University. This is the first match-up between the two squads since 2018; that contest resulted in a CIU win. It played out similarly tonight, as the Rams got on the board less than 20 minutes into the contest and held onto that lead for a 5-0 win.
Match Summary: Thais Roberto started things for the Rams, firing off her first shot less than two minutes into the game. However, Chloe Battaglia was the first Rams on the board, scoring off a corner kick (19:36) from Marisa Dill.
The Rams continued to stay in Regent's defensive end, giving Lily Vengelis a chance to find the back of the net to extend their lead 2-0 (38:42). CIU was not done attacking the net, as Gabby Fitzgerald deposited another goal less than a minute before intermission to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. Hailey Resetar picked up one save to keep Regent off the board.
It only took Callie Rowe one minute into the second half to add another to the Rams' score after a setup from Dill. Regent took several shots, but Resetar handled them to prevent a comeback.
Vengelis scored her second goal of the game (68:55) to secure CIU's 5-0 victory. The Rams took one more shot before the final buzzer but held Regent to just three shots in the second frame.
CIU outshot Regent 19-6, with Roberto leading the way with four. Vengelis picked up the first brace of her career, and Resetar hauled in three shots to help lead the Rams to their 10th shutout of the season. Fitzgerald's goal is the first of her CIU career.
Coach Kara Lail says, "I'm proud of the ladies and how they fought today. It took us quite some time to break down the Regent defense and find rhythm in the game, but once we settled in, we did some good things. I'm looking forward to the next game."
Up Next: CIU takes on No. 3 SAGU (Texas) in pool play on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 3:30 p.m. with a NCCAA title match on the line.
