WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - CIU women's soccer took on Carolina University (N.C.) in the NCCAA South Region Championship on Thursday night. The Bruins are coming off a 2-1 win over Regent University on Tuesday evening.. A goal from each team in the first half resulted in a draw at the final buzzer, forcing overtime. CIU found the back of the net with this extra time to walk away as NCCAA South Region Champions.
Match Summary: The Bruins took the game's first shot (2:34) and kept the ball in the Rams' defensive end for the first half of the first frame. Thais Roberto took CIU's first shot with the header going wide. Then, Marisa Dill's shot ricocheted off the crossbar before Callie Rowe found the back of the net off a setup from Avery Long (34:57).
Carolina evened out the score four minutes later, but Roberto and Mercy Berkemeyer took two more shots before the halftime horn to attempt to take the lead again.
CIU's offense came out strong at the start of the second frame, taking three shots to make the keeper work in the net. The Bruins' backline saved Dill's shot off Lily Jackon's corner (70:57).
The Rams outshot the Bruins 10-4 in the second half, but neither team could break the tie, forcing overtime.
The ball stayed in Carolina's defensive end for most of the first ten minutes of overtime, with CIU taking three shots and forcing two corner kicks. Berkemeyer broke the tie (93:45) to give the Rams the 2-1 edge. The Bruins took one shot during this period, but Hailey Restar gathered it in. There wasn't much action offensive action in the second overtime period, guaranteeing CIU's 2-1 win.
