Offensive outburst from Rymer Attaway and Weiss lead Rams past Bluefield

COLUMBIA - CIU women's volleyball did what they have done all season long in the Moore Fitness Center, which is add a victory to their season win total, as the Rams took down Bluefield University, 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-11, 25-20). The Rams hold an unblemished home record at 8-0 and are now 26-1 overall and 17-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). CIU sits a match in front of Milligan (Tenn.) in the AAC standings and just needs to win one of its final two home matches to clinch its third consecutive AAC regular season championship.

Friday night saw CIU drop its first set at home this season as Bluefield tested the Rams in the second set. However, an 11-0 run in the third set got the momentum going, and the Rams never looked back. CIU would not trail again in the match to take care of business knocking off the visitors from Virginia.

Hanah Weiss and Kira Rymer Attaway torched the Bluefield defense, each recording 18 kills and hitting over .300. The duo set the season high for combined kills with their performance. Lydia Gustafson was impressive in her own right, with five kills and five blocks (four solo and one block assist). The Rams had four players with double-digit digs as Kelcey Mangum led the way with 25 while Alana Sanjurjo added 20.

Kamelia De Jesus added a double-double to her season total with 31 assists and 13 digs, while Melissa Campos Soto chipped in 18 assists of her own.

Graduate student Ingrid Ferrari made her presence felt for the Rams with a .800 hitting percentage, four kills, and three blocks.

What Coach Katie Weiss is saying: "Bluefield came ready to play, and we did not match their energy early. But we endured their run and bounced back, which is a lesson we can hopefully take into the postseason. Kira and Hanah each stepped up tonight; it is always a plus when you have hitters on either side contribute the way they did."

Up Next: The Rams have a quick turnaround as they face Kentucky Christian tomorrow, Oct. 28, on Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. EST.
