BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - CIU women's soccer took the road for the first time in conference play for a matchup with Montreat (N.C.). The Rams entered Wednesday following a 3-0 loss to No. 20 Truett McConnell (Ga.) at Sessions Field and aimed to get back in the win column over the Cavaliers. Montreat has also had a solid start to the season with a 4-2 record overall and a 4-1 mark in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) entering the contest.
Montreat took a two-goal advantage in the second half. CIU quickly answered the Cavalier's second strike with a goal of their own to trim the deficit but never managed to put in the equalizer on the road.
Scoring Summary:
The Cavalier's first goal came in the 27th minute of the first period on a long shot that connected right outside the outstretched hands of CIU goalkeeper
Jessica North. Montreat took a 1-0 lead into the half. In the first period, Montreat took control of the time of possession and fired off seven shots. The Ram's shots came few and far between as CIU managed to only take one through the first 45 minutes of action.
Isabell Aguilar earned her second goal of the day at the 51st-minute mark in the second period to stretch the Cavalier's lead to two scores. However, in the same minute, CIU showed life as
Mercy Berkemeyer found the back of the net on a through ball by
Haley Hernandez to cut Montreat's lead to one score. CIU had promising chances in the remaining minutes of the second period, with five shot attempts but weren't able to capitalize to even the score. As a result, CIU drops to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2 in the AAC.
