Women's Soccer records clean sheet win over Bluefield

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU women's soccer managed to sneak in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest with Bluefield College (Va.) after the match date and time was changed several times due to Hurricane Ian. The Rams entered the match between the Bluefield Rams (0-8, 0-5 AAC) at 4-2-1 and 2-2 in conference play. CIU claimed their third win in AAC competition over Bluefield, winning at Sessions Field 4-0.

Scoring Summary:
CIU wasted no time getting in the goal column as Haley Hernandez scored just over three minutes into the contest on an assist from Gabby Fitzgerald. Roughly nine minutes of play later, Avery Long would stretch CIU's lead by scoring on a header, on a well-placed ball from Arianna Elliott. Later in the period, Mazzie Leos struck a beautiful shot outside the box to extend CIU's lead to 3-0.

After assisting on a goal earlier in the match, Arianna Elliott managed to find the net on an assist from Mercy Berkemeyer to tally the Ram's final goal of the contest in the second period. CIU played stifling defense for 90 minutes to earn the clean sheet, allowing three shots, with only one being on frame. CIU was in attack mode all afternoon, taking 20 shots with ten on goal. Elaine Smith got the nod in goal for CIU, recording a save in 68 minutes of action. Julianna Bost also saw action at the keeper position for the first time this season.

What Coach Kara Farnsworth Lail is saying:
"It's always difficult with a lot of changes due to the hurricane right before a game; however, the ladies showed up ready to play. We really focused on discipline today, and they executed well."

Up Next:
On Wednesday, Oct 5., the Rams will head about two miles up the road for a battle with Columbia College (S.C.). at 7 PM.
