BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - CIU men's soccer looked to claim their fourth straight conference win with a match on the road against Montreat (N.C.). CIU entered the matchup 4-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), while the Cavaliers held a 3-5 record on the year and a 2-3 mark in the AAC. After trailing, 1-0 after the first period, CIU rattled off three goals in the second to defeat the Cavaliers on their home turf, 3-2. With the win, CIU sits firmly atop the standings as they continue through the always-tough AAC.
Scoring Summary:
In the 5th minute of the opening period, Montreat's Hugo Rodriguez gave the Cavaliers the early one-goal advantage. CIU had opportunities to strike in the first period with seven shots but couldn't finish as they trailed 1-0 at the break.
The Rams were more efficient in the second period as they scored three goals, which helped propel them to victory.
Lucas Galdino found the net for the first time this season to tie the game in the 62nd minute. Roughly five minutes of play later, the electric
Sohya Yamamoto struck on an assist from
Fabio Bender to take a one-score lead.
Praise Kabwe would put the icing on the cake with a goal on a penalty kick to knock in his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Cavaliers would try and rally as Hugo Rodriguez struck again in the 75th minute, making the score 3-2. However, CIU would anchor down defensively for the remaining time to escape with a win on the road.
