Softball makes statement with two wins on opening day of NCCAA World Series

KANSAS CITY, MO. - CIU softball played their first two games of the 2022 NCCAA Softball World Series against the No. 6 seed Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans and the No. 7 seed Arlington Baptist University Patriots on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams started off the tournament's pool play strong with two solid wins, 6-4 over the Trojans and 11-4 over the Patriots. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

GAME ONE: CIU 6 HLU 4: CIU got things going against the Trojans with two runs in the second inning which was started by Hallie Miller, who blasted her second home run of the season. The Trojans would answer with two runs of their own in the top of the third inning. CIU scored a run in the bottom of the third and fifth; however, Hannibal-LaGrange battled back to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Finally, the Rams were able to put together two runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the game one win. 

BOX SCORE NOTES: 

  • Haylee Wilkerson was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs. 
  • Hallie Miller went yard for the second time this season. 
  • Mary Esterak pitched seven solid innings, allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts. 

GAME 2: CIU 11 ABU 4: CIU took an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. The Rams added two more runs in the second due to a Stolzenbach two-run homer, going up 3-0. After the Patriots got on the board with a run in the bottom of the inning, both teams would settle in for the next three innings. Then, in the final two innings, CIU would go on an offensive explosion, scoring eight runs to go up 11-1. The Patriots managed to salvage three runs in their final at-bat, but their efforts weren't enough as the Rams cruised to an 11-4 win. 

BOX SCORE NOTES: 

  • Lauren Baker put together three hits against the Patriots with two RBIs. 
  • Haylee Wilkerson continued producing after an efficient first outing, with two more hits and three RBIs. 
  • Megan Stolzenbach was impressive in the win, hitting her first career home run with a two-run shot in the second inning. 

What Coach Sara Allen is saying: 
"Proud of our team for the effort they play with today. We hit the ball consistently hard in both games and made timely defensive plays. Both of our pitchers were fantastic, and I'm glad we are playing our best softball when it matters most." 

What Next: 
The Rams will take on the No. 2 seed Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas.) in their final pool-play contest tomorrow at 10 AM CT.
