CIU punches ticket to NCCAA Softball World Series championship game with dominant win over Eagles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - CIU softball began day two of play at the 2022 NCCAA Softball World Series with another set of two games on Wednesday. The first game was the final pool play contest before the teams were reseeded, in which the Rams took on the No. 2 seed Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas.) Lions. The Rams then took on the No. 8 seed Trinity Baptist College (Fla.) Eagles in the tournament's semifinal round, a team they beat in the NCCAA South Region Championship just under two weeks ago. The Rams fell in the first game to the Lions 6-5 but then defeated Trinity Baptist College 14-1 to advance to the championship tomorrow.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CIU 5 SAGU 6:
The Rams found themselves down early after giving up three runs in the opening inning. CIU responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Both teams added a run in the second, making the score 4-2. After neither team put up runs in the next two innings, the Rams battled back with a three-run fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately, the Lions scored two runs in the seventh to retake the lead and sneak one past the Rams.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Haylee Wilkerson continues to hit the ball well in Kansas City, as she went 2-of-3 with an RBI against the Lions.
  • Catie McGovern pitched the entire game, allowing ten hits and three earned runs.

GAME TWO: CIU 14 TBC 1: After giving up a run in the first inning, the Rams dominated for the rest of the contest. CIU answered the Eagle's run with four in the first. They then scored two in the third and an impressive eight in the fourth inning to take a commanding 14-1 lead. The Rams hit the lights out, quite literally, as the stadium lights went out before what proved to be the final half-inning of play. After a brief pause in play, the Rams secured the last three outs in the top of the fifth inning to run-rule the Eagles.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • CIU outhit the Eagles 12-2.
  • Mary Esterak and Julia Thielen had stellar performances in the circle, allowing only two hits with three strikeouts.
  • Kaitlynn Creel was 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
  • Robyn Andrews was also impactful as she was a perfect 3-of-3 with three RBIs.

What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"After a heartbreaking loss in our first game today, I'm proud of how our team battled back to clinch a spot in tomorrow's championship game. Looking forward to competing for our first title in just our fourth year as a program. It is exciting to see how far we have come but the journey is not over yet."

Up Next:
CIU will take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (SAGU) for a rematch in tomorrow's championship game at 1 PM CT.
