COLUMBIA, S.C. - After Union College (Tenn.) dropped two games early in the day on Thursday, all eyes were on CIU baseball, who had an opportunity to secure the final spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament with a win versus Point University (Ga.). The Rams (20-30, 10-18 AAC) would do just that with an 8-5 victory over the Skyhawks (19-9, 24-19). CIU will have the opportunity to move all the way up to the ninth spot in the AAC with a sweep of Point on Friday and a loss by Montreat College (N.C.) to Union.
Thursday evening saw CIU jump out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Britton Morris in the third inning. Point responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own. The Rams answered this time off the bat of Buddy Bleasdale, who lofted a fly ball over the left-field wall to knot the score at 2-2. Each team exchanged blows until the Rams found themselves tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore Rafael Gonzales calmly stepped up to the plate and drove home the go-ahead run with a line drive to center field. CIU added two more (8-5) on a Carter Willis two-RBI double before right-handed pitcher Brett Collins ended the Skyhawks' comeback hopes in the top of the ninth inning.
