COLUMBIA, S.C. - After clinching a spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament on Thursday, CIU was able to relax and just play on Friday as they notched the series win over Point University (Ga.). The Rams took game one of the conference doubleheader 5-4 and then dropped game two to the Skyhawks 12-6. CIU finishes the regular season with an overall record of 21-31 and 11-19 in the AAC.
GAME ONE: CIU 5 PU 4: CIU opened up a 2-0 lead in the third on a Britton Morris RBI double and an Alex Miller RBI single. Point climbed their way back in and held a 4-2 lead after six innings. The game's turning point came in the seventh inning as the Rams once again turned to Morris and Miller. Morris drove in a run, and then Miller pushed CIU ahead with the two-RBI single. The Rams did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way to secure the series-clinching 5-4 win.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- It was a combined pitching effort of Tyler Parker, Trent Polly, and Rodrigo Rodriguez that held off the Skyhawk's bats. The trio combined for six K's as Parker got the start, Polly got the win, and Rodriguez recorded his third save of the season.
- Alex Miller and Britton Morris combined for all of CIU's five RBIs as Miller went 2-for-3 while Morris went 2-for-4 with a double.
GAME TWO: PU 12 CIU 5: Jan Maldonado put CIU up 1-0 in the first inning on a single to center field, but from then on, it was an uphill battle for the Rams as they trailed 8-1 after three. CIU would not get the bats going again until the fourth, when both Robert Bell and James Lovera recorded RBI singles to cut the deficit to 12-5. The Rams added one more in the fifth, but it was not enough as they were upended 12-6 by Point.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Despite the final score, CIU was only outhit by Point 8-7 and reached base on balls nine times compared to the Skyhawk's six.
- The Rams had six different players record a hit.
- Joshua Searson pitched the game's final three innings and did not allow a hit.
