CIU Softball secures second AAC series win over Montreat

MONTREAT, N.C. - CIU Softball looked to get back into the win column on Tuesday with another Appalachin Athletic Conference (AAC) road series against Montreat (N.C.) (4-21, 2-6 AAC). The Rams were able to add two more wins to their record this season, getting the series win over the Cavaliers and improving to 13-16-1 and 4-4 in the AAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

GAME ONE: CIU 7 MC 2: Montreat got things going on their home field with two runs in the first inning. However, CIU would settle in for the rest of the game, allowing no more runs and adding on seven of their own in the next three innings to claim victory 7-2. 

BOX SCORE NOTES: 

  • Macey Drye made the most of her appearances at the plate with two hits and an RBI. 
  • Catie McGovern got the win in the circle, improving to 4-4 on the season while allowing only one earned run with three strikeouts. 
  • Montreat outhit CIU 9-8; however, the Cavaliers had three costly errors in game one. 

GAME TWO: CIU 13 MC 4: CIU was able to strike big early with seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Rams would then add another run in the third and then three at the top of the fifth inning to take an 11-0 advantage. Needing to score four runs to avoid being run-ruled, the Cavaliers did just that to keep themselves alive. However, CIU would add on two more runs in the sixth inning to secure a 13-4 series win on the road. 

BOX SCORE NOTES: 

  • Five batters for the Rams recorded two hits in game two, helping the Rams put up 16 hits as a team. 
  • Cissy Doolittle started for the Rams in the circle and got the win while pitching fiving innings and allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts. 
  • Nine of the first ten batters for CIU reached base in the first inning, where the Rams scored seven runs. 

What Coach Sara Allen is saying: 
"Great team wins today! Catie, Cissy and Kendall all threw well, the defense played great and we had clutch hits when we needed them. It was fun to see a lot of different people contribute to the sweep."

Up Next: 
CIU will host Columbia College (S.C.) this coming Friday, March 25, for just one game at 4 PM.
