COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU baseball played their tenth and eleventh games against an NAIA top-ten opponent this season as they hosted the final two games of their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series with No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan (16-1, 6-0). The Bulldogs are a tough test for any team in the country, and despite battling hard, CIU (6-14, 0-6) dropped game one 4-2 and game two 8-4.
GAME ONE: TWU 4 CIU 2: The Rams got up early on the Bulldogs as standout freshman Britton Morris hit a single to right field to score pinch-runner Shane Hammonds. After a three-run homer from the Bulldogs in the second inning, CIU responded with the bat of sophomore Jan Maldonado, who smacked a homerun to left field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. TWU added two runs in the seventh, and the Rams bats would go dry as CIU fell in game one.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Freshman Peyton Evans held his own on the mound against arguably the best team in the NAIA as he threw a career-high eight strikeouts in seven innings.
- Joshua Hernandez went 1-for-3 at the plate while being walked once, while Jan Maldonado went 1-for-3 with a solo homer.
GAME TWO: TWU 8 CIU 4: After getting down 3-0 early on, CIU would load the bases in the bottom of the second, setting up Ward Hacklen to score after Jan Maldonado forced the fielder choice. The Bulldogs grew their advantage to 5-1, but CIU clawed back. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Robert Bell recorded an RBI triple which got the bats humming as both Grant Bodison, and Maldonado notched RBI's to trim the lead to 5-4. However, the Ram's fourth-inning spurt was not quite enough, as the Bulldogs added three more in the fifth and sixth to close out the seven-inning game.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Grant Bodison went 2-for-3 with an RBI for a solid outing at the plate.
- Kody Trujillo recorded two hits in three at-bats while Jan Maldonado notched two RBI's in game two.
- CIU pitched six different players, with Dean Seelbach leading CIU in strikeouts with four.
What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying:
"Overall, I was pleased with our weekend. Playing a 20-year plus powerhouse isn't an easy task. Our goal was to be in every game late to give ourselves a chance to win. It all came down to them being more successful putting the ball in play with runners in scoring position."
Up next:
CIU will play a non-conference game at Miller Field as the Rams host Bob Jones (S.C.) on Tuesday, March 1 at 5 PM.
