BRUNSWICK, GA. - CIU Softball took on the undefeated College of Coastal Georgia for a midweek series on Thursday afternoon. The Rams entered the contest with a 5-3 record but were tested on the road against the Mariners falling to Coastal Georgia in both games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CIU 1 CG 9: Hallie Miller brought in a run in the Ram's first-inning with a double to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage. However, Coastal Georgia would strike back with four runs at the bottom of the first. Then, the Mariners would add five more runs in the next three innings to take down the Ram in five innings.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
GAME TWO: CIU 4 CG 6: Similar to game one, Hallie Miller would double to bring in a run in the first inning. Again Coastal Georgia would bring in multiple runs in their first at-bat, scoring three to make it 3-1 deficit for the Rams. However, CIU would begin to settle in, only allowing three more runs for the rest of the game. CIU would make it interesting late, with a solo-homer in the 5th inning by Kendall Parker and a Haylee Wilkerson two-run homer in the 6th innings to make it a 6-4 game. Unfortunately, CIU could not string together two more runs in the top of the 7th to tie the game.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Catie McGovern played all seven innings in game two, striking out five batters and giving up nine hits.
- Haylee Wilkerson had a good performance at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.
- Kendall Parker also had an impressive game with two hits of her own and one RBI.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"We did a great job of bouncing back and competing game two after a rocky game one. Coastal GA is a very good team and we definitely got better playing against them. There are a few things we need to do better in order to compete at that level, so I look forward to seeing how the team responds."
