COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU softball was back in action Saturday for a two-game series against NCAA Division II foe Southern Wesleyan University (S.C.). The Rams entered the contest 5-5 on the season and looked to bounce back after dropping two games to the College of Coastal Georgia earlier in the week. The Rams split the series with the Warriors, winning in game one and falling in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CIU 9 SWU 8: The Warriors would get on the board early with two runs in the first inning. CIU would answer by adding one run at the bottom of the first. After Southern Wesleyan added two runs to their lead in the third inning, Hallie Miller would ground out to third base, allowing Tanaya Ellis to score on a fielder's choice. After three quick outs, CIU's bats would erupt in the fifth inning. With a runner on base, Shannon Patton would go yard to add two runs. Then, Kaitlynn Creel would drop a single into left field, bringing in another run. Finally, Hallie Miller would hit a three-run homer to give CIU a 9-4 lead to cap off the inning. The Warriors scored four runs in the seventh, but their comeback efforts would fall short, giving the Rams a 9-8 game one win.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Hallie Miller continues to produce offensively with another solid game recording two hits and four RBIs.
- Catie McGovern got the win in the circle for the Rams, pitching five innings with two strikeouts.
- The Rams as a team had eight hits in game one.
GAME TWO: CIU 10 SWU 14: The Rams came out of the gate on fire in game two with three runs scored in the first inning. Then, Southern Wesleyan would heat up as they scored four runs in back-to-back innings and then two more runs in the fourth to take a 10-5 lead. However, CIU would start to chip away at that lead with five combined runs in the 5th and 6th innings to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Rams, the Warriors would have another four-run inning to close the game.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Errors were an issue for the Rams as they totaled eight in game two.
- Kaitlynn Creel had a big game two with three hits and an RBI.
- Hallie Miller recorded two more hits in game two, giving her 14 on the season, which leads the team.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"Game one was the first time in our program that we've beaten Southern Wesleyan, and we played fantastic team softball to do it. It was a really great game, and I'm proud of our growth and teamwork to accomplish that. Game two was a different story, and I think we showed great fight offensively but lost it with defensive sloppiness. We have to figure out how to play routine softball, and as soon as we do that, we'll be able to compete with anyone."
