COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU volleyball did not have to go far to continue their run through the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) as they dismantled Columbia College (S.C.) 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-2) on Tuesday night. The Rams move to 24-7 overall with the victory and 14-1 in the AAC. The Koalas continue to struggle, falling to 1-19 overall and 1-14 in conference play.
The most notable takeaway for the evening for the Rams was the 25-2 win in the third set. The win is the largest margin of victory in a single set in program history. The Rams were exceptional, defensively holding the Koalas to a -.011 hitting percentage and just 13 kills. In contrast, CIU had two players with double-digit kills, as
Abbey Kleist recorded 15 and
Kira Rymer recorded 14. Rymer was effective at the net as well, with four blocks, as fellow upperclassman
Jadaeya Morrell collected three blocks of her own. On top of her defensive effort, Morrell picked up nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Setter
Kamelia De Jesus tallied a double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs, while reigning AAC Defender of the Week,
Kelcey Mangum, led the Rams with 20 digs.Â
What Coach Haver is saying: "We did some goal setting prior to the match and the team worked hard to meet those goals. Winning 25-2 in a college match is exceptionally hard to do. It requires disciplined, nearly error-free volleyball. Really proud of the effort I saw tonight."
Up Next: CIU will face Columbia again this weekend, hosting the Koalas on Friday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m.Â
