CIU women's soccer bests Converse in overtime thriller

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The CIU women's soccer matchup against Converse University (S.C.) proved to be one to remember for the Rams on Thursday night. Head Coach Kara Farnsworth Lail's bunch had outscored their opponents 10-1 in their first two matches this season. Thursday's contests was much more contested; however, the Rams would prevail in the second overtime period to defeat the Valkyries 2 to 1 to remain undefeated. 

Scoring Summary:
The Converse Valkyries were on the attack early. They set the tone for Thursday's very physical game. Converse's Kaitlin Dansie would score the game's first goal just under 2:00 minutes into the contest. After an early strike by the Valkyries, the Rams would settle in, as Rebekah Reinhard would put the first goal on the board at the 34:10 mark, which Mazzie Leos assisted on. The two squads would continue to battle throughout the first half, but neither could take the lead before the half, as it remained tied going into halftime. 

The second half was more of the same as neither team could not find the back of the net. The Rams had 11 total shots in regulation but could only connect on the in the first half. The second half would end with the score still 1-1, sending the game into two overtime periods. Finally, just 42 seconds into the second overtime, Mercy Berkemeyer would score the game-winning goal to give the Rams their third straight victory. 

What's Next:
The Rams continue their excellent start to the season, improving to 3-0 overall. Their next game will be on Tuesday, Sept. 7, as they travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on Bob Jones University (S.C.) for their first road game of the 2021 season.
