KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The CIU women's soccer team took on the Johnson University Royals Thursday night in their second Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game of the season. The Rams went to Knoxville and took care of business in a wild overtime game defeating the Royals 2-1 moving CIU to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Scoring Summary:
It was a defensive battle in Knoxville for the Rams. The game's first goal came early for the Rams as Amber McKinley would strike just 3 minutes into the contest. But, after that, both teams would buckle down defensively, not giving up a goal despite several shots from each squad. Johnson would test CIU, however, as the Royal's Sarah Roberts evened the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick with five minutes left in regulation sending the game into overtime. McKinley would then step big for the Rams, putting an end to the contest with a golden goal in 95th minute to give CIU their second overtime win of the season.
The Rams finished the contest with 21 shots on goal compared to the Royals two.
What Coach Kara Farnsworth is saying: "Tonight was about conquering little wins. Adversity hit us at every turn, starting with an hour and half delayed start, playing with ten players because of a red card, injuries, lights going out, but the girls focused in on what we could control; our effort, keeping emotions in check, and playing our game. As a coach, those games are the worst, but we still praise and thank the Lord for them, because it showed what we can walk through and persevere through in the midst of adversity together."
What's Next: The Rams head to Kentucky for their next AAC matchup with Kentucky Christian University on Saturday, Sept. 18, at noon.
