Volleyball splits on final day of NGU Tournament to win 3 of 4 over the weekend

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. - CIU women's volleyball finished off day two of the North Greenville Invitational Tournament on Saturday, picking up a win and a loss on the event's last day. The Rams would fall to Fayetteville State (N.C.) 3-2 in match one of the day and defeated Johnson C. Smith (N.C.) 3-0 in match two. Both of CIU's opponents hailed from the NCAA DII ranks as the Rams move to 8-5 overall after going 3-1 in the tournament.

MATCH ONE: CIU 2 FSU 3 (26-24, 22-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11): CIU picked up their only loss of the entire tournament after five hard sets against FSU. The Rams would even lead 11-10 in the final set, but FSU scored five straight for the set and match win. Alana Sanjurjo picked up a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Cintia Lorena and Mardi Scutchings also had double digits kills as Lorena had 14 and Scutchings tallied ten. Kamelia De Jesus had her season-high in assists with 42 while adding three blocks. Carla Cauchi contributed ten digs to the Rams cause, while Karla Rodriquez chipped in 15 digs of her own.

MATCH TWO: CIU 3 JCS 0: (25-17, 25-15, 25-12): The Rams handily took care of JCS in three sets. The Rams got back to the defensive dominance that they displayed earlier in the year with ten blocks as a team and held JCS to a dismal .064 hitting percentage. Cintia Lorena accounted for four of the Rams blocks and chipped in 10 kills. CIU had an impressive 11 aces, with Kamelia De Jesus leading the way with four while the setter also added 30 assists to her season total. Alana Sanjurjo led the Rams in both kills and digs with 11 kills and nine digs.

What Coach Haver is saying:

"I am really proud of the hard work these ladies put forth this weekend. We identified some weaknesses that we are looking forward to getting in the gym to correct. Most importantly, though, I saw a lot of this past week's hard work pay off on the court. We exhibited some versatility, which made for a fun couple days of volleyball. Excited to get back into conference play on Tuesday."

Up Next:

CIU will head to Brenau University on Tuesday, Sept. 14 for another Appalachian Athletic Conference road contest.
