Rams offense powers past Eagles in round one of NCCAA South Region

TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. - The CIU Baseball team headed to the NCCAA South Region tournament on Monday to face the number No. 4 seed Trinity Baptist College. The Rams entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, after a heartbreaking defeat in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament last week. The Eagles and Rams meet for the first time this season, as the season series between the two squads was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns back in February. After seven innings, CIU downed the Eagles by a score of 8-2. 

Key Plays: 

  • CIU's high-powered offense struck first, as Gabe Austin batted in an RBI single to left field, scoring Corley Cheeks giving CIU a one-run advantage in the first inning. 
  • Trinity Baptist answered back with a homer in the 2nd inning, tying the score at one-all. 
  • CIU broke the stalemate in the 4th inning, with a one-run homer from non-other than Gabe Austin, giving the Rams a one-run lead. 
  • In the 5th inning, Carter Willis blasted a homer to the right field, scoring another run for the Rams, going up on the Eagles 3-1. 
  • Trinity Baptist powered back in the 6th, scoring a run off of a sacrifice fly, drawing within one of the Rams. 
  • As the game entered the 7th inning, the Rams offense unleashed. Rafael Gonzales batted into a sac fly, scoring Buddy Bleasdale in the process. Later in the at-bat, Josh Hernandez hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Carter Willis from third going up 5-2 on the Eagles. In the next at-bat, Robert Bell doubled to left field, scoring Hernandez from first base. Gabe Austin followed up Bell, hitting a two-run homer over the left-field wall, giving the Rams an 8-2 victory over Trinity Baptist.  

Key Players: 

  • Gabe Austin's contributions proved vital in CIU's win, as the senior catcher tailed three hits, two runs, four RBIs, and two homers on the day. 
  • Carter Willis came up big batting, with three hits, two runs, and one RBI. 

What Coach Johnson is saying: 
"Great first win for us today. I was a little worried about the guys having a let down coming off a tough conference tournament but they did what they needed to do to win. We look forward to a tough battle with Toccoa tomorrow."

Up Next: The Rams will play No. 3 seed Toccoa Falls tomorrow in the second round at 12:30 PM.
