Rams errors to much to overcome dropping series to Golden Tigers

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The CIU softball team stayed at home on Friday afternoon, hosting Brenau University at 1 & 3 PM. The Rams looked to bounce back after dropping a series to Point University on Wednesday. CIU fell short in both games on what would be a gorgeous spring afternoon.

Game One: CIU 2 BU 7

  • The Golden Tigers got things going on the score sheet, scoring a run in the top of the 1st off of an RBI single to shallow left field from Maygan Loparo.
  • CIU answered with a score in the 2nd inning, tying the game at 1-1. Heaven Zamora reached on a wild throw by Brooke Wakeniggs, allowing Taylor Allen to score from third on the same error.
  • The Golden Tigers bats found some rhythm in the 4th inning, as Brenau gained momentum. Two runs would be scored in the inning's early goings, off of two errors by the CIU infield, the first being a missed catch by Kendall Parker, and the second from a Heaven Zamora wild throw. Later in the inning, Maygan Loparo batted in Morgan Tyler off a double to deep right-center field. The fourth and final run of the inning would be scored by Maygan Loparo, off a sacrifice fly from Brooke Wakenigg.
  • The Rams made up ground in the 5th inning, as Robyn Andrews hit an RBI single to shallow center field, sending Ashlee Chinn home.
  • The Golden Tigers continued their successful hitting, scoring two runs in the top of the 6th inning, earning a 7-2 win over the Rams.

Game Two: CIU 3 BU 10

  • Brenau got to work early yet again, batting in two runs in the 1st inning of the second game. Hannah Patridge hit an RBI double to left-center. Later in the inning, Abigail Brown tripled to deep right field, scoring Hannah Patridge on the play.
  • The Tigers extended their 2-0 lead in the 2nd, as Faith Grooms hit an RBI single to deep right-center field.
  • The Rams rallied in the 5th inning, tying the game at 3 all. Ashlee Chin got the scoring going for CIU, with an RBI single, sending Sarah Trawick home. Later in the at-bat CIU had the two runners on base at 2nd and 3rd, with the go-ahead run up to bat in Haylee Wilkerson. The sophomore catcher connected on a pitch, hitting a double to deep center field, scoring both runners on base to tie the game at three-all.
  • However, this momentum didn't last as the Golden Tigers took advantage of 3 errors and a homer in the 6th inning to score four runs, going up 7-3 over CIU.
  • Brenau poured onto their lead in the top of the 7th, scoring three final runs off of two hits and an error.
  • Despite a promising 5th inning rally, the Ram bats were silenced through the final two innings, giving the Golden Tigers the series sweep.

Key Players:

  • Haylee Wilkerson had an impressive day at the plate, batting in two runs and tallying four hits on the day.

Up Next: The series with Union College scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed and will be played at a later date. The next contest on the schedule for the Rams will take them to Bluefield College on Wednesday, April 14.
