COLUMBIA, S.C. - The CIU Rams Softball team returned home Wednesday afternoon to kick off a three-series homestand this week, with the other two series being played on Friday and Saturday. It was breast cancer awareness day at the ball park, as CIU wore pink jerseys to honor and remember the many who have been affected by disease.
As weather reached the high 80's the Rams looked to down the Point University Skyhawks. However, CIU's hopes were shot after 14 innings, as the Skyhawks went on to win both games in the series.
Game One: CIU 3 Point 7
- Tanaya Ellis opened the scoring for the Rams in the 1st inning, getting on base from a single to short. With Robyn Andrews up to bat, Ellis went onto steal second and third and would be batted home by Andrews off of a sacrifice ground out.
- The Skyhawks climbed back into the game in the top of the 2nd, scoring four runs off of three hits and one error, taking a 4-1 lead over CIU.
- The Rams cut the lead to two in the bottom of the 3rd, as Robyn Andrews hit an RBI single to shallow center field, sending Ashlee Chinn home for a score.
- Point managed to put more distance between themselves and CIU with a score in the 4th inning. Taylor Knight hit a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Meagan Pildner home to go up 5-2 on CIU.
- The Skyhawks continued hitting well into the 6th inning, scoring two runs. Angela Heimback bunted, moving McKensie Barnes home. Later in the side, Shatima Smith hit an RBI single to third, sending Alexus Griffin home. Point University held a firm 7-2 lead over CIU.
- The Rams attempted to rally in the bottom of the 7th as Tanya Ellis hit a clutch RBI tripled to short, scoring Heaven Zamora. This late offensive spark would not be enough, however, as CIU would lose game one 7-3.
Game Two: CIU 0 Point University 5
- The Skyhawks opened up the scoring in the second game, scoring early and often. Angela Heimback hit an RBI double to third, giving Point University its first run of the game. On the next at-bat, Taylor Knight hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence, giving Point a 3-0 lead.
- Point scored another two runs in the top of the 2nd inning, with runs coming off of a two-run RBI double from Angela Heimback, giving Point a 5-0 lead.
- The Rams made a switch at pitcher after the 3rd inning, as Reagan Cox came in to relieve Kendall Parker. Cox steadied the Rams defense, striking out two batters, allowing only four hits and zero runs.
- The CIU bats found little success against Point pitcher Amber Parker, as the Rams would fall to Point, 5-0.
Key Players:
- Tanaya Ellis saw success batting, tallying four hits, one run, and one RBI on the day.
- Reagan Cox played well on the mound in game two, allowing no runs and only four hits on the day.
