Softball splits series with Knights

GRAYSON, Ky. - The Rams of Columbia International University traveled to Grayson, Ky. to engage the Knights of Kentucky Christian University. CIU looked to bounce back after dropping a series to Milligan University on Tuesday. The Rams downed the Knights in game one, but were narrowly beaten in the second, splitting the series with KCU. 

Game One: CIU 7 KCU 3 

  • The Knights got off to a hot start in the 1st, scoring two runs off of an RBI single to right field from Katelyn Pavey. 
  • CIU answered in the 2nd, as Heaven Zamora singled to center field, scoring Kaitlynn Creel drawing within one of KCU. 
  • Both teams remained deadlocked until the 5th inning, as KCU would score on an RBI single toward third base, going up 3-1 on the Rams. 
  • CIU shortstop Kaitlynn Creel kick-started the Ram's comeback in the 6th inning, blasting a two-run homer over the left-field fence on a 1-2 count tying the game at three-all. 
  • The Rams offense got to work in the 7th inning, as the game remained tied at three. Robyn Andrews broke the stalemate with an RBI single, sending Tanaya Ellis home for the go-ahead score. CIU wasn't done, as Kaitlynn Creel continued her big day, hitting an RBI single to the left, scoring Robyn Andrews. Later in the side, Shannon Patton made contact with a pitch, hitting a two-run RBI single to center field, giving the Rams a 7-3 victory over KCU. 

Game Two: CIU 6 KCU 9

  • CIU took no time to get going on offense, taking a commanding four-run lead in the 1st inning. Shannon Patton put the Rams on the board first, hitting a two-run RBI single to short, sending Robyn Andrews and Haylee Wilkerson home. In the same sequence, Kaitlynn Creel and Shannon Patton would reach home on a wild throw by the KCU shortstop, giving CIU a 4-0 lead. 
  • The Knights battled back in the bottom of the first, scoring a run off of an RBI single to center field by Samantha Schwab. Later in the side, Victoria Breckler singled to left field, scoring another run for the knights, cutting the Rams lead to two. 
  • CIU found a way to extend the lead in the 3rd, with a Sarah Trawick RBI single to second base, allowing Shannon Patton to score her second run of the day. 
  • The Knights bats found their rhythm in the bottom of the 3rd. KCU batted in a run early in the side, from Sydney Houck. Bryn Osburn got involved, hitting an RBI single to center field, cutting CIU,s lead to one run. The Knights took the lead off of a misplayed grounder from Rams shortstop Kaitlynn Creel, as KCU would score two runs going up 6-5 on CIU. Kentucky Christian batted in the last run of the inning from a Katelynn Pavey RBI, giving KCU a 7-5 lead. 
  • The Knights extended their lead in the 4th, as Victoria Breckler hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Later in the side, Bryn Osburn would also hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Knights a 9-5 lead. 
  • CIU attempted a late rally in the 6th, with a RBI single from Robyn Andrews, sending Tanaya Ellis home. This wouldn't be enough, however, as Kentucky Christian took home the win in game two. 

Key Players

  • Kaitlynn Creel batted in three RBIs, three hits, and one home run, as well as scoring four runs. 
  • Shannon Patton had a huge day, tallying four RBIs, three hits, and two runs. 
  • Sophomore pitcher Catie McGovern had a solid game one, earning the win, as well as nine strikeouts, and allowing only three runs. 

Up Next: The Rams look to host Point University on April 7th at 2 & 4 PM.
