Rams defense not enough against Milligan

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The CIU softball team hosted an impromptu home series against Milligan University on Tuesday afternoon, as the game was scheduled to be played at Milligan on Thursday. Due to flooding in Tennessee, the game was moved to Columbia instead, where the Rams held the home-field advantage. However, after two games, CIU (11-18) wouldn't be able to do enough to topple the 20-4 Buffalo's, losing both contests.

Game One

  • Milligan started out hot in the first inning, scoring two runs off of an error by CIU first basemen Shannon Patton, and an RBI single from Neelee Griffith to shallow center.
  • The Buffs got on the scoresheet yet again in the 3rd inning, scoring two runs off of a single from April Alvarado, giving Milligan a 4-0 lead.
  • The Rams battled on defense, however, as pitcher Catie McGovern had a solid rest of the day. McGovern wasn't alone, as the Rams defense rallied, making sound defensive plays.
  • Despite solid defensive play from the Rams, the CIU bats were unable to get things going, losing to Milligan by a score of 4-0.

Game Two

  • CIU entered the second game with an adjusted line-up, as starting shortstop Kaitlyn Creel didn't play due to an injury that occurred in the first contest.
  • The game was blown open by Milligan College in the 2nd inning, as Milligan College would score six runs off of four hits and two errors. CIU trailed the Buffs 6-0, heading into the top of the 3rd.
  • The Rams continued to demonstrate solid field play as they held Milligan through the 5th inning.
  • The Buffs found their spark once again, scoring two runs off of a single to left field and an error in the same play by Madison Medlin. Later in the at-bat, the Rams conceded another run off of an RBI single to shallow center field, going down 10-0 to Milligan.
  • CIU had an opportunity to break the run-rule in the bottom of the 5th but would be stonewalled, losing to Milligan College 10-0.

Key Players:

  • Catie McGovern struck out seven batters in the first game, allowing only six hits and four runs.

Up Next: CIU hits the road traveling to Grayson, Kentucky, on Saturday to play Kentucky Christian University at 1 & 3 PM.
