Collins leads the way in win over Valkyries

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The CIU Rams women's soccer team hosted their first and only home game of the spring season Thursday afternoon as Converse College came to town. CIU comes into the day with a solid win against Edward Waters College in mid-March. As temperature    s neared the mid-70s and clear skies, the Rams were able to down the Valkyries by a score of 2-0. 

Key Plays:

  • Converse got pressure early with an early shot, saved by Kayla Lusk.
  • The Rams answered on the other end of the pitch with a shot from Leaoness Hinojos. The shot was saved by the Valkaryie goalkeeper Darian Bankston. 
  • CIU kept up the attack with shots from Amber McKinley and Rebekah Reinhard, both narrowly missing opportunities. 
  • The Rams offense found the back of the net in the second half, from a Tara Collins goal, assisted by Haley Hernandez. Collins curved the ball into the net from just inside the left 18-yard line, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Valkyries had opportunities to even the score, with a shot narrowly missing the left goal post. Converse was awarded a free-kick later in half right outside the 18-yard box; however, the shot would sail over the net. 
  • As time clicked down, CIU would strike once again with two seconds on the clock. Tara Collins found the back of the goal, from an impressive cross from Leaoness Hinojos with no time to spare, as the Rams defeated converse 2-0.

  • Kayla Lusk had a solid day in goal, with four saves and a clean sheet.
