GREENVILLE, S.C. – CIU baseball is no longer the new kid on the block as the Rams took on a program even younger than their own Tuesday. CIU faced off in a doubleheader against NCCAA foe Bob Jones University as the Bruins played their third and fourth games in program history. CIU welcomed Bob Jones to collegiate baseball, handing them two losses, 9-4 in game one and 4-2 in game two. The Rams have now won a program-record nine games in a row, and after starting the season, 0-5 now sit at 9-5 overall.
Game One: CIU looked to be in trouble as the Rams gave up four runs in the 2nd inning and trailed 4-1 heading into the 3rd. The Rams would answer as Carter Willis singled to center field in the third inning, scoring Shane Hammonds and Rafael Gonzales while advancing Joshua Hernandez to 3rd. Hernandez tied the game in the next at-bat scoring off an error by the Bruins. The bats stayed quiet for both teams until the 6th inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hammonds singled to bring home Kody Trujillo. In the next at-bat, Gonzales notched a two-RBI double as Bryce Spittle and Hammonds tallied runs. Hammonds then scored on an error, and Hernandez recorded his own RBI double bringing Gonzales across home plate. Chandler Hunter held the Bruins scoreless the final two innings from the mound, and CIU coasted to the 9-4 win.
Game Two: Carter Willis picked up where he left off in game one picking up an RBI single to get the scoring going in the second game. CIU nursed a 1-0 lead until the top of 3rd when Bryce Spittle was walked with the bases load scoring Joshua Hernandez. Later in the top of the 4th, Rafael Gonzales tripled to right field and scored Shane Hammonds from second base. The Bruins made the game interesting, cutting the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th. The Rams answered, however, as Spittle recorded his second RBI of the game, sending Robert Bell home on a single. Bob Jones flew out twice and then ended the game on a ground out in the bottom of the 7th, giving the Rams their second win of the day.
