CIU picks up first conference loss of the season to start series with Knights

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The CIU baseball team headed north to St. Andrews University Friday to begin a weekend conference series with the Knights. CIU (9-5) entered game one of the weekend, riding high on a 9-0 winning streak. Unfortunately, St. Andrews (6-5) would add a blemish to the Rams record handing them their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) loss of the season. The matchup was the first meeting in baseball for the two schools, as will be the case for several of the Rams opponents this season.

How It Happened: It was a promising start to the game for CIU has Rafi Gonzales singled to lead off for the Rams. Joshua Hernandez was then walked as Gonzales advanced to second. However, the Rams were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and left the inning empty-handed. St. Andrews quickly took advantage of the missed opportunity scoring two runs on a J.R. Polak double in the bottom of the 1st. St. Andrews would add one more before the end of the inning, and the Rams trailed 3-0 heading into the 2nd. Rafi Gonzales was a bright spot for the Rams as he picked up another single in the 3rd inning, but no runs would come of Gonzales' effort. Bryce Spittle notched a single in the 5th inning and advanced to second on the Shane Hammonds sacrifice bunt, but the Knights defense held as the Rams were unable to score in the inning. The contest's final run came off a Greg Izzo single and brought the Knights lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the 7th. The score remained intact through the final two innings as the Rams fell to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Game Notes:

  • Brett Collins recorded the loss on the mound as he allowed eight hits in 27 at-bats while throwing three strikeouts. Collins is now 2-2 on the season.
  • Trent Polly closed for CIU notching two strikeouts while allowing two hits and no runs.
  • This is the first shutout the Rams have been handed since a 6-0 loss to then #1 Tenessee Wesleyan on February 22nd, 2020.

Up Next:

CIU will continue their series with St. Andrews as the Rams have a doubleheader with the Knight starting Saturday at 12PM.
