COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU men's soccer returned home for a contest with cross-town rival Columbia College (S.C.) Wednesday afternoon. The match marked the first-ever competition between the two programs, as the Columbia College men's soccer program enters its first season of play. The Koalas came in with a 2-6 record overall and a 1-5 record in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). On the other hand, the Rams came in undefeated with a 9-0 overall record, 5-0 in AAC play. The Rams would win the match in a very sloppy battle due to consistent rainfall throughout the night. CIU notched their tenth win of the season to continue their exceptional 2021 season.
Scoring Summary:
The first half for the Rams was one full of missed opportunities. CIU dominated possession time and would shoot a staggering 16 shots but couldn't turn those opportunities into goals. Several of those shots came inches away from finding the net but never bounced the Rams way. As a result, the Rams and Koalas would end the first half in a scoreless tie.
The second half started similarly, with the Rams on the attack consistently. Then at the 57:20 mark,
Praise Kabwe would put the Rams on the board with a goal on an assist from
Rafael Carneiro. The final goal of the game would come from
Eduardo Igor at just past the 79:00 minute mark. The Rams totaled a monumental 36 shots on the night, testing the Koalas goalie, Miguel Rivas-Giraldo, for 90 minutes. However, Rivas-Giraldo would hold his own against the undefeated Rams, recording an impressive 22 saves, only giving up the two goals in the second half.
What Coach Bill Brindley is saying:
"We didn't finish our chances like we would have liked to tonight, but we're always happy to get a win, particularly against a resilient Columbia College team. The guys are focused now, looking to Saturday's game against Milligan."
What's Next:
The Rams now turn their attention to their next game on Saturday, Oct. 9, as they clash with conference powerhouse and No. 12 ranked Milligan University (Tenn.). Kick-off is set for 7 PM.
