LAURINBURG, N.C. - CIU women's volleyball is continuing to not only prove to be one of the best teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) but perhaps in the nation as the Rams took care of business against a formidable St. Andrews squad Tuesday night. The Rams picked their seventh conference sweep defeating the Knights (5-18, 5-5 AAC) 3-0 with sets wins of 25-20, 25-14 and, 25-16. With the win, CIU moves to 17-6 overall and 9-1 in the AAC.
The defensive effort from the Rams once again played a key role in CIU's victory. The Rams, who currently sit second in the nation in total blocks, had eight block assists and three solo blocks. Ingrid Ferrari was stout at the net with three solo blocks and three block assists. Kira Rymer led the offense with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage against SAU's reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Week, Andrea Rose. Setter Kamelia De Jesus tallied 27 assists for the Rams while notching four digs. Alana Sanjurjo was effective serving as she recorded four aces while propelling the Rams offense with eight kills. Karla Rodriguez and Emilia Niedzielska combined for 17 digs as Rodriguez picked up nine and Niedzielska added eight.
What Coach Amber Haver is saying:
"Coach Mandeville has built a great program during her tenure at SAU. Their defense is great and they have strong blocking. We knew we would need to serve aggressively and work hard to out-block them and out-dig them. Our servers did well, producing nine aces. Proud of the effort tonight."
