Women's Soccer picks up crucial win in shutout of St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. - CIU women's soccer played their final road game of the regular season Wednesday afternoon against the St. Andrews Knights. The Rams entered the game with a chance to tie the program record for wins coming in at 8-8 overall and 5-7 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. CIU claimed the victory thanks to a goal by Haley Hernandez in the second half, notching their ninth win of the season. The win is important as it keeps the Rams solidly in ninth place and in the AAC playoff hunt.

Scoring Summary:

The first half saw no goals scored despite six combined shots. Rams goalkeeper Emily Nelson tallied three saves in the first half to stifle the Knights' offensive attack. CIU would buckle down defensively and not allow a goal even though the Knights played in six corner kicks. The game would go into halftime scoreless.

Offensive opportunities opened up for the Rams in the second period as they took nine shots. The Rams would connect on the games only score as Haley Hernandez would find the net with an assist from Mazzie Leos at the 57:26 minute mark. Emily Nelson had a career day, recording a season-high six saves for the Rams in the win.

What Coach Kara Farnsworth Lail is saying:
"We are proud of the girls for battling for 90 minutes and finishing the game well. St. Andrews came out hard on us putting us on our heals. Mazzie had a great through ball to Haley who had a beautiful finish. Proud of the entire teams effort today. We are looking forward to getting back to work to prepare to close out conference on Saturday with Bryan."

What's Next: The Rams return home for senior day on Saturday, Oct. 30, as they take on Bryan College (Tenn.) at 2:30 PM.
