Men’s Soccer sits atop AAC standings with statement win at No.19 Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. - Wednesday night's game between CIU men's soccer and No.19 Reinhardt University (Ga.) was a battle of the unbeaten in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). The Rams came into the contest 11-0 overall and 7-0 in AAC play. Meanwhile, the Eagles had posted a 10-0 record with a 7-0 record in the AAC and a first-place spot in the conference. The Rams were down at halftime but clawed back in the second to secure the 4-3 victory over the Eagles. The victory gives the Rams their 12th of the year, tying the school record for most wins in a single season. This also notches the Rams' third win over an NAIA Top 25 team this season.

Scoring Summary:
The Rams were down early to the Eagles as Pavel Dashin would score the game's first goal. However, CIU would anchor down for the rest of the period, not allowing another goal despite three more shots and two corner kicks from the Eagles. The Rams were not able to create many scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes. As a result, the Eagles would lead a defensive battle going into halftime 1-0.

In the second half, Pavel Dashin would strike again just four minutes into the period to give the Eagles a two-goal advantage. The Rams continued to struggle to find scoring opportunities, which was uncharacteristic of the group considering that they've been dominant this season offensively, outscoring their opponents 37-4. However, at the 54:14 minute mark, Sohya Yamamoto would help the Rams get into a groove, finding the back of the net on an assist from Romulo Barreto. After that, the Rams would go on an offensive frenzy, scoring three straight goals. The first would come from, defender Michael Abongo, on an assist from Yamamoto at the 58:03 minute mark. Then the teams leading scorer and caption, Rafael Carneiro would score with assists from Barreto to give the Rams a 3-2 advantage. Finally, Bryan Molina would find the net on another assist for Barreto, giving him three total on the night. The Eagles would try to stop the bleeding with a goal by Lukas Gerhardt at the 85:49 mark, but the Rams would not be denied securing a profound 4-3 victory over No. 19 Reinhardt.

What Coach Bill Brindley is saying:
"This group keeps surprising me. They stay together and fight as a family, they trust each other, they trust the process, and best of all, they keep finding ways to win."
